Details About Fowey

Destinations » Europe » British Isles » Fowey

The southern strip of the Cornish coast holds a string of medieval harbor towns. Some of these appear somewhat tarnished due to various degrees of commercialization, but there are still spots where one can experience the best of Cornwall. The estuary town of Fowey (pronounced Foy) is one.

Activities

  • St. Fimbarrus Church - Fowey’s steep layout centers around this church, which features a distinctive 15th-century building and marks the traditional end of the ancient 30-mile Saints’ Way from Padstow.
  • Place House - This extravagant building with a victorian gothic tower grafted on to the 15th-century fortified building stands just behind the church.
  • The Esplanade - This popular walkway leads to a footpath which eventually provides access to some splendid walks around the coast.
  • Lostwithiel - Just a few miles out of Fowey lies this appealing mixture of georgian houses and dark cobbled passageways, with a peculiar Breton-inspired octagonal spire on St. Bartholomew’s church. Looming over this old market town is Restormel Castle, a shale-built shell of a circular keep that crowns a hill one mile north of Lostwithiel.

Shopping

Fowey is not exactly a shopping mecca. It may be fun to browse in the stores along Fore Street to see what residents buy. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
