OBJECTIVES
This series of lectures is designed to educate and update the primary care physician on current hot topics relevant to infectious disease in their office practice.  Upon completion, participants should be able to discuss new vaccines and new antibiotics and antivirals in common practice.  Lectures will touch on viral pathogens seen in general medical offices such as Influenza A & B, Mononucleosis, and RSV as well as pathogens related to ingestions such as Hepatitis A.  Other presentations will include discussions about typical infections seen in outpatient practice such as pneumococci, Group A beta hemolytic streptococci, and resistant staphylococci.  There will be course lectures on infectious rashes, Lyme disease, and other tick-borne infections.  There will be a special discussion on prevention of HIV transmission and two case presentations taken from cases seen at the pediatric outpatient center at SUNY Stony Brook.  Thre will be a review and group discussion of a recent topic appropriate to outpatient management of infectious disease.  There will be time set aside for discussion of both antibiotics and their use and abuse as well as open discussion of nosocomial pathogens found in the hospital. This seminar will be relevant to family practitioners, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, and other physicians and health professionals who manage pediatric patients.
